Artifacts - Abstractions of Industrial Relics

What started as a casual morning of photographing old farm implements has evolved into an exploration of the color, texture, and form of discarded industrial relics of the past 400 years. I have intentionally obscured the original use, moving away from traditional photographic representations to focus on creating an abstract painterly expression of the remaining elements.

I used to find the decay and corrosion in a junk pile depressing. I now see a very different view in these piles of rusting, twisted metal. I see the beauty and mystery in the patinas of age and revel in the emotions and pure feelings the images evoke. I love talking with people about these images – they are quite surprised to have missed this intimate beauty. Often expected to be representational, my photographic challenge is to create imagery sufficiently compelling that the viewer is not drawn to place the object in a known context but rather to explore their inner feelings based upon what they see.
